A well written, focused rant, however, is great way influence others. We use rants to narrow down our ideas to develop and send a clear main idea. This speech is mainly used to see where everyone is with their public speaking.

What is a Rant?

A rant is an opinionated speech about a current, meaningful topic

· It usually expresses a position (how you feel about something)

· It involves taking a stance about something important

· Rants are usually witty, humorous, and entertaining

· They are designed to leave a lasting impression about the topic

· The point of a rant is to communicate your frustration or beliefs about a given issue

What Makes a Good Rant?

Clear Structure:

Intro – Captures the attention and quickly establishes the clear and focused topic of the rant

Middle – Provides challenging statements which help the listener/viewer recognize the main points of the rant…. the “AHA!” moment.

· Details are well researched and clearly support the evidence

End – Wraps up with a statement that leaves the listener/viewer with a deeper understanding of the topic.

· May contain a summary with a catchy final statement.

· May also suggest what people should do about the topic or a solution.

Steps to Creating an Effective Rant

1. Choose a Topic and Narrow it Down

a. Choose one topic and list a few specific frustrations you have about that topic.

2. Write a Clear and Focused Main Idea

a. Determine exactly what it is you want to people to think when you are done ranting.

3. Choose Subtopics

a. Choose 2 or 3 convincing arguments for your Rant

4. Research and Choose Supporting Details

a. The most convincing arguments are ones that are well researched. This proves that others agree with you.

b. At least one detail in every subtopic paragraph should be research based.

c. Choose details that you think will interest, entertain, and persuade your audience.


5. Create a short Rant clearly expressing your feelings about the topic you selected.

a. You can write out your speech verbdom to help you memorize main points.

b. Make sure each ideas flows into the next main point.

c. Your rant should read like a speech.

d. Build up anticipation to the conclusion.

6. Turn outlines in a week before your speech

a. You outline should be submitted to me the week before your speech

b. Be sure to include a refence page.
